2009 Kentucky Derby – Mine That Bird
Jockey Calvin Borel won the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) May 1 on heavy favorite Rachel Alexandra, and the following day in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), he scored a huge upset on Mine That Bird. “I did a Street Sense ride,” Borel said, referring to his winning ride aboard Street Sense in the 2007 Derby. Borel is known for bringing horses up the rail and is affectionately called “Calvin Bo-Rail.” In the 19-horse field, only one horse was longer odds than the 50-1 price on Mine That Bird. That was the 55-1 odds on Atomic Rain. Borel was even more demonstrative than when he won on Street Sense. He was crying, screaming, and pumping his fist in the air as he brought the son of Birdstone back to the winners circle. After he squirted through on the rail in the stretch, Mine That Bird drew off under Borel to win by 6 ¾ lengths. Pioneerof the Nile was second, Musket Man, and Papa Clem finished fourth. The final time was 2:02.66. Mine That Bird paid $103.20, $54, and $25.80. Pioneerof the Nile returned $8.40 and $6.40, and Musket Man paid $12 to show. Pioneerof the Nile beat Musket Man by a nose, while Musket Man was a head in front of Papa Clem.

Wow… and he looks like a fairly little horse too. He can’t be much more than more than 14 or 15 hands! The jockey looked huge on him!

That under 25 second angle is for races longer than a mile, usually 10 furlongs and up.

Fluke horses are not capable of running a final 1/4 in 23 1/5 in a 10 furlong race. Heck, an age old handicapping angle has been to favor a horse who runs his final 1/4 mile in under 25 seconds. I hope for a good clean race and I hope MTB runs a strong race.

MTB ran his final 1/4 in 23 1/5!! That is Secretariat- like!! I am in no way saying he is the next Secretariat. The mud may have moved him up,and or his being farther back then ever before may have contributed to his stunning victory. Being a little horse, not having to match strides with bigger horses earlier in the race, and then just letting him make one big sustained run may have been what moved him up on form. Whether he wins the Preakness or not,I do not for a minute believe he is a fluke!

All horses tested negative. Even in the Oaks.

Durkin did mess the call, but he is still the best in the business. Hell I was confused too when he made the lead I had no idea it was Mine That Bird!

It was a terrible call, but your right, he is the best. One bad call does not take away from his (in the 100′s?) great calls.
June 14th, 2010 at 5:14 am
i think that was mainly because he was so surprised, speechless… lol

Mike Battaglia to call the race from now on, would be great!!
June 14th, 2010 at 5:52 am
Yep a horrible racecall.. at 1:05 he says Mr. Hot Stuff is last in the race then corrects himself w/ MTB as trailing the field down the backstretch…That day the puzzle pieces to MTB was a perfect fit.
June 14th, 2010 at 6:11 am
it wasnt that bad of a race call you just could not see the horse coming throug the rail that quickly when your calling other horses durkin is the best thats why he,is there

how does papa clem nearly pushing ff two slots over and a lot of getting banged around translate into how larry jones trained??the horse was hurt and eased.

What a terrible call, horse almost across the finish line before his name is mentioned.
June 14th, 2010 at 8:03 am
The worst KD call I’ve ever heard..
“..That is ah…….Mind that Bird.” He was clear 3 lengths before he got to his name.
June 14th, 2010 at 8:41 am
he was in like 13th going to the home stretch

A horse with some talent rediscovering his early form, running his eyeballs out in the race of his life on a surface he clearly loved and that gave his small size and light weight an advantage, a magnificent, ground-saving ride by a masterful rider who knew about the speedy rail bias, and wasn’t afraid to take advantage of it. Oh, and a helluva a lot of racing luck. It all equals the biggest shocker in 135 years. I don’t think there was juice involved here. His connections were shocked.

Plain and simple – the most unlikely winner in the history of American classics. Obviously some of it has to do with Borel’s genius, but it still is odd that this horse was able to jump up so much. His top Beyer going in was 81! At least Giacomo made some sense.
