Why is there “BET” and “black men” magazine?

Question by Johanex: Why is there “BET” and “black men” magazine?
im black myself and i just don’t agree with how people think they can name a channel or magazine after an entire group of people. plus if these were channels or magazines that promoted positive influences and messages that would be one thing, but the fact that its themes are rap hip hop, wearing certain types of clothes and sports just shows its only attributing to the growth of black males in america that fall under these stereotypes.

Another thing that amazes me is that how is it that people are not objectified by this(especially african-americans), yet if there were a white channel or some sort of organization intended only for whites people scream racist.
Digaa, im sorry to say so but you’re ghetto, the day my “blackness” is defined on whether or not i follow your so called “black culture” is that day all racists won.

Because the mainstream media is mostly white. WE need something that shows us what is being what we are.

  3. OceanOfLiesBand Says:

Because, simply put, black people feel like they have a right to do so. I gauran-fucking-tee that before long there will be more black shows.

  4. Digga : Says:

    Just stfu!!

BET ain’t for black people it’s for people who consume black culture! Most TV channels cater to white American culture.

    Btw, you are not black!!

I didn’t define your blackness in my answer, I’m actually the exact polar opposite of blacks who think like that. Anyway Im just tired of white people moaning about this shyt!! And yes you are white!!

  5. Richard T Says:

you ain’t black, only white people ask these type of questions.

  6. GETitGIRL Says:

Well it’s there because of a lack of black representation in the media.

    I Agree with you

In Business World, People Don’t Give a Damn about Other Feeling or respect as Long as They Making Cash out of it.

Don’t get me wrong, same thing with Porno Movie,, very very disrespectful picture to what supposed to be our moms and sister and daughters and such.

    Money Is the Devil

  9. ilovestrawberry.com Says:

I don’t have a problem with it and I’m white. Let’s be honest a good 75% of “mainstream” tv is aimed at White Males ages 18-45. It’s just a fact. So I have no problem with smaller groups, black, women, Latino, having their own sations.

  10. Heather B Says:

Agreed. And the fact that there a scholarships and schools for blacks only..?

  11. lovelyday Says:

“Im Black myself” stop right there……..

  12. Michel Says:

Well, Johnny that’s just the way the media is. they do it to everyone. Don’t watch if you don’t like it, or protest, do something about it. And Richard T, YOU’RE A MORON

  13. I Love Shia LaBeouf Says:

I HATE BET! They don’t put anything positive on there for us black ppl to watch. All they put is music videos and vulgar comedy. Are we really that stupid? C’mon. Sometimes they will have Gospel or church sermons on Sundays, but 6 days out of the week it is nothing but junk! I will be more than happy if BET no longer existed. I have no interest in it and never will.

  14. Becsters the prodigy :o) Says:

You people complain about the DUMBEST things, if you had a life that stuff wouldn’t even pass through your mind….

so its obvious you don’t. :)

What about MTV tres thats all Latino and rap and reggeton? *sheesh get over it. about 88% of all things on television are with white people! *Duh!

  15. Layla! Says:

I am mixed with miztures of races and I 100% agree. In way it’s okay for black people to be racist towards others, but if white people are racist it’s bad. People are scared of whats diffrent and they want to stick to their own “group” and it’s hard to let others in.

  16. Sofija Says:

    thats very true
i totally agree with you on that
i think the people that created these things feel its right because they were the ones that got “picked on” to put it lightly and they feel its ok to this because of that
if a white channel was made oh it’d be the end of the world!
even if it was i would totally disagree with it still but my god i totally see what your saying

  17. PaoloPH Says:

I have no problem with it.

Anyway, most black people I know think BET is stupid [and yes it's owned by white people anyway]

  18. mellowish08 Says:

Oh who knows. It’s not like anyone really cares that there is a BET. I doubt anyone would really care if there was a WET. (except the media of course). WET probably wouldn’t be as funny, cause lets face it, black people are pretty entertaining. Just in their culture I guess. I don’t see it as a racist thing at all.

  19. Fool Says:

i agree with you. its just plain racism nothing more and nothing less..

  20. dream Says:

I get 300 white ch. why can’t they be 1 black..not that i ever watch it

  21. Alana Says:

did you know that BET is now owned by white people (viacom) so why dont you ask them.

  22. ☮Becky☮ Says:

Why not? There are channels that appear to everyone – here are a few examples:

[adult swim] & Comedy Central appeal to mostly teenagers and young adults of all races.

Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and PBS tend to draw in children and young teens of all races.

Lifetime – “The Channel For Women” – need I say more?

There are also networks that air shows in one language – did you forget about the Spanish channels? These channels are there for people who don’t fully understand the English language yet, or for people who are trying to learn Spanish.

I always lumped MTV, VH1, and BET together because they are primarily music-based channels (for the most part), none of which “objectifying” any specific race. In fact, did you know that at least one of the members of N*Sync have been on BET? Granted, BET airs music and programs that have common themes, but it attracts different races. That’s why I don’t think BET is objectifying any race. If that were really true, it would have been given the axe a long, long time ago.

Having channels such as these gives us a sense of other cultures that you may not know about already, which is a benefit – especially if you can’t travel to other places for this type of exposure.

black man cant have nothing for hisself without pasty keyboard gangsters acting froggy. dayummmmmmmmmm
