The Rules Of Spanish 21
The Spanish game of Blackjack, known as Spanish 21 or simply Spanish Blackjack, is a popular variation of the game with rules that favor the player
This entertaining variation of blackjack offers the opportunity to get massive payouts on hands that total 21, do things like Hitting or Doubling after splitting Aces plus a very unique option called “Double-Down Rescue”.
The Rules of the Game
The most notorious characteristic of Spanish Blackjack is that it’s played using a Spanish deck, which is a standard deck of 52 cards where all 10-value cards have been removed (10′s, Jacks, Queens and Kings). So effectively youre playing with decks of 48 cards, not 52.
By removing these cards from the deck (10s and face cards), casinos swing the odds back in their favor by eliminating the possibility of getting a natural 21 hand.
So, how is Spanish 21 attractive for players then? Well, to make up for this, casinos have also introduced a series of rule variations that will balance the odds. One good example of this is that players are much more likely to build a hand of 21 using 5,6 or 7 cards which features a payout as high as 50:1.
So there are two positive things about not having 10 value cards. On the one hand, youre far more likely to build a 21-hand using 5-7 cards and get high payouts on your bet. On the other, the odds of going Bust are much lower.
The rules of the game can vary from casino to casino but broadly speaking you can expect Spanish 21 to be played using 6 or 8 Spanish decks of cards – just remember that the higher the number of decks used, the higher the casinos advantage will be.
Other favorable rules of Spanish 21 include being able to Split any pairs, re-Split and even even re-split Aces. Actions are not restricted after splitting hands, so you can Hit or Doubling Down on a split hand, even on a split pair of Aces and you can Double-Down on any hand regardless of the total point value.
Theres is also the option for Late Surrender even after Doubling-Down. If you choose to Surrender after Doubling Down, the amount of the original stake is reimbursed.
Its important to note, however, that in this game the dealer is forced to Hit on a soft 17. The implication of this is important for players because this effectively increases the houses edge by 0.22%.
Unique Hand Combinations
In this game, the players 21 will win against a dealers 21 but theres a different payout for this hand depending on how many cards make up this 21 hand.
For example, a 21 hand using 5 cards will payout at 3:2, a six-card 21 will return bets at 2:1 and if you create a 21 hand using 7 or more cards your stake is paid out at 3:1.
There are specific card combinations that offer similar payouts. For example when you build a hand thats 21 in value using 6,7 and 8 or using 3 sevens of mixed suits, this will payout at 3:2. When you create this hand with cards of the same suit, the payout is 2:1 and if its created using Spades, theres a 3:1 payout on your bet.
And finally, the highest payout on your stake will come from creating a 21-hand of suited 7s when the dealers up card is a 7, which has a payout of 50:1.
As you can see, Spanish 21 is indeed an exceptional and entertaining game of blackjack that features attractive payouts and favorable game rules. Whats truly unique about this popular blackjack game is that players dont need to place an additional side bet in order to qualify for increased payouts.
