You may not have thought that a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United would be enough to satisfy the majority of the passionate, loyal Queens Park Rangers fans who pack out their home ground week in, week out, especially in light of the fact that Newcastle lost most of their good players over the summer and instability still haunts them at board and pitch level wherever they go. However, earlier this week, a goalless draw was exactly what the QPR fans were left observing as they welcomed the side from the North-east, and as it turns out, they were pretty happy with what they saw.
The match was an important one for the squad as, being the first game since the close of the transfer window and taking into account the heavy investment that had gone on over the summer months, it should have provided a decent indicator as to how much quality and strength in depth had been added by the club’s new investors.
Rangers fans and the club’s manager Neil Warnock therefore breathed a hefty sigh of relief when the new-look team appeared to waste little time in gelling, with the players putting on several displays of scintillating, attacking football right from kick-off. Shaun Wright-Phillips, who was making his debut for the club alongside five other players, was perhaps the most impressive man on the pitch throughout the 90 minutes, the winger proving that ill-fated stints at Chelsea and Manchester City haven’t dampened his enthusiasm for the game and his technical ability with the ball at his feet.
Another new face to impress was new QPR captain, and ex-Newcastle star, Joey Barton, who managed to keep his cool throughout the game despite playing against a club that, in effect, forced him out the door at St James’s Park. The QPR boss was particularly pleased to see a solid performance too from frontman Adel Taarabt, the man disposed as captain upon Barton’s arrival. Taarabt is yet to score in the Premier League for the London outfit, but it would appear to be just a matter of time before he opens his scoring account in the top flight of English football.
Anton Ferdinand and Luke Young also enjoyed decent debuts for their new club, so the signs look good for Neil Warnock and QPR as the 2011/2012 Premier League campaign gets underway in earnest. There is still work to be done, though, especially with the club’s attacking unit, who were wasteful in front of goal, missing a number of chances throughout the course of the game. If they add that finishing touch, then Premier League survival won’t remain a distant, vague hope, but should become a reality for QPR supporters.
